Beach Scene Tutorial

Dagger stroke is very important in t-shirt airbrushing.  Many aspects of painting on t-shirts involve use of this basic stroke.  Practicing them can become tedious and boring.  This beach scene is a way you can practice your dagger strokes, see some progress and alleviate some of the boredom.  In this example I use only black paint.

The first step is to lay two daggers down to represent the beach. Step 1
Second step, I lay some daggers from right to left to define the water. Step 2
The next step is to fade a half circle above the water and along the beach. Step 3
Here I use the bottom of a spray can as a mask to create the sun.  This is also just a light fade Step 4

Next are some squiggly daggers to represent the clouds. Step 6
Dagger strokes make up the palm trees and sea grass Step 7
Add some light fades for the shadows from the trees and grass, make sure that you remember where your light source is, and put the shadows accordingly. Step 8
Here is a picture of the same scene in color. I used pthalo blue, hot pink, yellow and black in this version. Note that the little birds are also dagger strokes.  Add a script name and you have a quick, easy seller. Step 9
